TYPES OF LASER SURGERY

TYPES OF LASER SURGERY

There are many different types of laser surgery available to the general public today. Laser technology makes procedures less invasive and reduces the time needed to complete common surgeries. Laser procedures also reduce recovery time and make surgeries much less painful than traditional procedures. Surgeries that once required prolonged hospital stays can now be performed on an outpatient basis.

The most common and well-known type of laser surgery is laser eye surgery. During a laser eye surgery, also known as LASIK, surgeons make an incision and remove tiny bits of the cornea, reshaping it to achieve better focusing of light on the retina. The process greatly reduces patients’ vision problems. This procedure is rather painless and very quick. Recovery time is very short, and most patients’ needs for contact lenses or eyeglasses are reduced or eliminated by this laser surgery.

There are also several types of cosmetic laser surgeries. Laser skin surgery involves removing the outermost layers of the skin, exposing softer and less wrinkled layers below. This procedure reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles that come with the aging process. Lasers are also used in other elective procedures, such as the treatment of acne or scars on the skin. These procedures use cool laser technology to remove infected is discolored layers of the skin, revealing the smoother, more normal layers beneath it.

Laser surgery is also used for other medical procedures, like treatment of enlarged prostates and hemorrhoid treatments. Lasers are also used in cataract removal procedures, making these surgeries significantly less invasive and painful than they once were. Because laser surgery requires fewer incisions, the procedures are much safer than traditional corrective procedures.

  WHAT IS LASIK ?
LASIK is a surgical procedure that is capable of correcting a wide range of nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism. Although LASIK is the most commonly performed refractive procedure in the United States, the FDA considers the performance of LASIK a practice-of-medicine issue. (This means that physicians can perform LASIK should the physician and the patient make the joint decision to do so.)
