detnews.com reports that United Healthcare will not pay up to half of corrective lasik eye surgery. One of Michigan’s and the nation’s largest health insurers said it will now offer partial coverage for corrective laser eye surgeries, including the popular LASIK procedure. UnitedHealthcare, with 400,000 Michigan members, will cover up to half the cost of LASIK, which is laser-aided refractive surgery on the cornea. The procedure costs an average of $1,800 per eye. Until recently, corrective eye surgery had been considered an elective procedure, similar to face-lifts and tummy tucks. But UnitedHealthcare is among a growing number of insurers providing coverage for LASIK and similar procedures.
In most cases, insurance companies will not cover PRK or LASIK. These procedures are considered cosmetic surgery. Check with your individual insurance carrier to determine whether or not coverage is provided.
Most of the time, insurance plans do not cover Lasik vision correction because it is considered elective. Some insurance plans have extended eye care plans that help defray the costs of Lasik. If you insurance plan does not cover Lasik, check with your employer. Some employers offer their employees special rates for going to a certain clinic for Lasik. Sometimes Lasik can be paid for by using a cafeteria plan.
